The three-time Daytime Emmy Award winning Dr. Oz Show continues its exclusive coverage of the journey of actor Charlie Sheen touching on a revelatory and life or death topic – his diagnosis of bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression.
In previous shows Dr. Oz interviewed Sheen about his diagnosis of HIV, his treatment regimen, as well as his desire to search for a cure.
Dr. Oz also got Sheen to open up about his battle with drugs and alcohol and his struggle for sobriety. On Monday’s show, Oz addresses the final and most dangerous element of Sheen’s health risks.
“Charlie is brave and at a point where he is taking an honest look at his health and sharing it with the world,” said Mehmet Oz, M.D., host, The Dr. Oz Show.
“The message in Monday’s show is that there is hope and successful treatment for bipolar disorder but, if left untreated it will exacerbate other problems like substance abuse and compulsive gambling.”

In an episode filmed at the actor’s home in Los Angeles, Sheen told Dr. Oz that medical professionals had diagnosed him as bipolar.
However, the actor said that he would rather endure the emotional peaks and valleys of the disease than live with the side effects of medication.
These are common concerns for patients with bipolar disorder and Dr. Oz invited a psychiatrist to the studio to address Sheen’s questions.
Dr. Oz also explores a checklist of symptoms with Charlie to measure the criteria of whether he should seek treatment.
An overarching message throughout the show is that a person with a bipolar diagnosis can live a very happy and productive life with a well-thought-out treatment plan and a supportive doctor.
Dr. Oz also conveyed to Sheen that he believed not only was manic depression the most serious health matter he needed to address, but also likely a major contributing factor to the addictions that have caused trouble in Sheen’s life – alcohol, drugs, sex and gambling.
The exclusive Dr. Oz Show interview broadcasts on Monday, January 18, 2016.
Currently in its seventh season, the three-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning syndicated daily series “The Dr. Oz Show” is hosted by the three-time Emmy Award-winning Dr. Mehmet Oz, accredited health expert, author, and cardiac surgeon.
