On the heels of Thursday’s opening day of $5.6 million in China, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 soared past the $500 million mark at the global box office.

The sequel is now not only one of the best reviewed films of the year, but also 2014’s highest grossing animated film to-date and one of the top ten grossing films of the year in any genre, claims DreamWorks Animation.

“This is a tremendous result for such a deserving, critically acclaimed film,” said Chris Aronson, president Domestic Theatrical Distribution, 20th Century Fox. “We look forward to riding Dragon 2 to greater box office heights.”

Through Thursday morning, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has grossed $170.6 million domestically and $331.2 million in international markets, including China, which premiered Thursday. Dragon 2 is still yet to be released in Italy, where it opens this weekend.

DreamWorks Animation (Nasdaq: DWA) creates entertainment content, including CG animated feature films, television specials and series, and live entertainment properties, meant for audiences around the world.
