Universal Pictures’ Fifty Shades of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, is about to touch $500 million sales at the worldwide box office.
According to movie performance measurement service of Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the film has already earned $486.2 million during the past two weeks of its release.
Fifty Shades of Grey is produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E L James. The screenplay for the film is by Kelly Marcel.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a film adaptation of a bestselling book. Since its release, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has been translated into 51 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.
An online Canadian sex toy retailer, PinkCherry, observed huge spike in sales and interest in sex toys after the launch of Fifty Shades of Grey film trailer.
“Universal’s ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ remains a staggering worldwide phenomenon with $486.2 million to date after adding nearly $50 million from 60 global territories this weekend. The modestly budgeted erotic drama is expected to cross the $500 million mark later this week making it one of the most profitable films released over the past year,” Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said on Sunday.
