It May Be Their Last: Fleetwood Mac Announce Extra Dates For Australia Tour
British fans may be queueing up to buy ticket for Fleetwood Mac’s only 2015 festival performance but fans everywhere else have another, more pressing concern: the band have just announced their 2015 tour will be taking them to Australia, and this time the tour may be their last.
Tickets for the Australia tour are already on sale, so fans had better hurry. The tour will be happening with the band’s original lineup — Christine McVie has come back together with Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie, and Stevie Nicks following 16 years of absence. That means the On With The Show World Tour (which as originally announced had just eight Australian dates) is going to be truly epic.
Adding to the tension is Lindsey Buckingham’s remark to American TV that this tour (and the album which will be coming out at some point) is going to be the band’s “last act.” In other words, this may be the last-ever chance for fans to see the band together.
The tour is the first time the band is touring as a five piece act since 1998, and they’ll be playing an array of stadium, arena, and winery shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Geelong, the Hunter Valley, and Brisbane in November and December. It’s the first time they’re visiting Australia since the Unleashed Tour in 2009.
Originally the band were planning to visit Australia in 2013, but bassis John McVie needed treatment for cancer ans so the tour was postponed. This time they will be performing a marathon-level 2.5-hour long set, full of classics and hits from their 40+ year career.
Starting at the end of March, the band also added a series of dates to the tour. First was a second Hunter Valley show, to happen at the Hope Estate Winery on the 15th of November. Then a day later they added a second show in Brisbane, on the 12th of November. Finally, a little under a week after that, they put an Adelaide show and a third set of Melbourne and Sydney shows on the calendar. The Adelaide show will be happening on the 28th of October, the Sydney show (at the Allphones arena) on the 25th of October, and the latest Melbourne show on the 6th November in Rod Laver Arena.
This tour follows on quite a year for the band: 2014 saw Christine McVie come back after the songwriter and keyboardist quit in 1998. They proceeded to play a widely acclaimed series of gigs. Now, however, it seems like this is going to be the band’s swan song. Lindsay Buckingham said in an early 2015 interview with the American PBS TV channel that they would continue working on their new album after the tour, but taken together the tour and album would be a “beautiful way” to wrap up “this last act.”
Of course, the album may take a while. Band founder and drummer Mick Fleetwood recently told ABC Radio that it might be a “couple of years” before the album is actually finished. The band’s touring has simply gotten in the way. That doesn’t mean they’re planning another tour, however, so get your tickets — while you still can.
