Jaat‘s release comes at a time when Bollywood is grappling with a significant credibility crisis. Concerns surrounding paid reviews, inflated box office earnings, and manipulated publicity are prevalent within the industry. A senior executive at Yash Raj Films estimates that a staggering 70-80% of all film reviews are paid for. This practice, which took root in the early 2000s following the film industry’s official recognition in India, involves PR firms and marketing agencies offering “rate cards” for positive coverage, social media engagement, and artificially created online trends.

The recent underperformance of films like Sikandar starring Salman Khan despite heavy pre-release hype, has highlighted the limits of such artificial promotion. In this context, the reception and reported box office performance of Jaat will be closely watched.

While some reports might suggest impressive earnings, it’s crucial to consider the industry-wide issue of inflated box office revenues, often used to create an illusion of success. Production houses allegedly collaborate with media outlets to exaggerate figures.

Ultimately, the long-term success and credibility of Bollywood, including films like Jaat, may depend on a shift towards genuine creativity and quality storytelling rather than a reliance on manufactured hype. As audiences become more discerning, the industry faces a pivotal moment to address its credibility crisis and focus on delivering content that resonates authentically.
